Lisa Poppe’s sister, Jill, diagnosed with schizophrenia, has spent decades in Missouri’s failing mental health system. After their father’s death, Jill was placed under state guardianship and sent to a nursing home, where she was given electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).
The ECT caused memory loss and aggression. Jill was later charged with assault while hospitalized and threatened with jail. With no better options to keep Jill out of jail, Lisa feels forced to leave her in the nursing home.
